VSL Awarded new SeaBus Contract

A contract for the detailed design and construction of a third SeaBus was awarded by South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink) to Victoria Shipyards (VSL) in late May.

"Victoria Shipyards is looking forward to this challenging opportunity and the project team is confident the new SeaBus will be delivered on time and exceed everyones expectations, said Bill van Dinther, VSL's Senior Project Manager, New Construction.

For many employees the awarding of this contract is a little like Dj vu as the two original vessels (which are still in operation) were built at Yarrows Ltd. In Victoria, by family members of some of the VSLs current trades people who will be working on the project.

The two existing SeaBuses are now over 30 years old and will soon need to be replaced or significantly updated to extend their service life. This new third SeaBus will permit TransLink to expand passenger capacity on their Burrard Inlet runs during the 2010 Olympics and minimize the chance of service interruptions. Detailed design work is already well underway and fabrication of this aluminum vessel is schedule to start in the new construction facility at Victoria Shipyards in August 2008. Delivery is scheduled for July 2009.

The new design is very similar to the existing vessels to ensure that it remains compatible with the two docking terminals. It will be built to meet or exceed Transport Canada requirements and will feature a larger bridge and increased passenger capacity, along with a more efficient hull form that should also reduce wake and decrease operating expenses. Passenger information systems, safety features and interior aesthetics are also being improved.

This new build project fits in well with VSLs other commitments as work on the Orca vessels completes early this fall.
